1. “Johnny’s Got a Boom Boom” by Imelda May
I love everything about Imelda May – she’s gorgeous, has a killer voice, and exudes ballsy rockabilly style. It’s also impossible to hear this song and not feel like a badass!
2. “Stay Awake” by Julia Nunes
This chick is AMAZING! Nunes was discovered through YouTube and is awesome and positive, with a really unique voice. I’ve been listening to this song over and over lately!
3. “Changes” by David Bowie
Besides the fact that John Hughes used a quote from this song in the beginning of The Breakfast Club, it’s just an amazing song (very Lou Reed-esque)! Also, Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane-era Bowie is a badass!
4. “All Day and All of the Night” by The Kinks
Sadly underrated compared to the other “British Invasion” bands popular at the time, The Kinks looked like The Beatles, but rocked way harder than The Stones and early 60s Who put together. While Mick Jagger played the rebel, lead singer Ray Davies was the real deal. His “Don’t Give a F*ck” attitude was exemplified by his decision to turn the band into an almost folky conceptual four-piece at the height of their pop-rock fame and the fact that he once stabbed his brother (guitarist Dave Davies) in the hand (or possibly the chest, stories vary) with a fork for stealing a french fry off of his plate.
5. “What a Wonderful World” by Joey Ramone
This song is happy and bouncy, and the fact that it’s a Ramones cover is just icing on an already awesome cake. (It also gives me warm fuzzies because it was played as the recessional at our wedding!)
